in conjunction with the exhibit
Marking Time: Voyage to Vietnam
Graffiti by Soldiers & Marines on Their Way to War

The book and exhibit showcase bunk canvases featuring scrawled inscriptions, signatures, cartoons, and poems by young servicemen headed to combat in the Vietnam War aboard the troopship the USNS General Nelson M. Walker. The ship shuttled thousands of young Americans ― most in their teens ― to Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. The graffiti included messages of patriotism, politics, humor, anxiety, and love, written for personal comfort, or to be seen by other troops who would then add more.
