Opening Reception: Saturday, July 30, 6 – 8pm

Flashpoint Gallery presents the DC debut of two artists, Janell Olah and Nicole Herbert. Janell Olah will present a solo exhibition called you make me nostalgic for a place I’ve never known in the Flashpoint Gallery. The show is organized by curator Amanda Jirón-Murphy. Nicole Herbert’sTrace will intervene into Flashpoint’s forgotten spaces to highlight the overlooked areas and subtle architectural details of the space. Both artists make works that respond to the design of the building to create site-specific installations.

Flashpoint Gallery will present a discussion with Janell Olah and Nicole Herbert moderated by Amanda Jirón-Murphy on August 27 at 2pm.

Janell Olah, you make me nostalgic for a place I’ve never known curated by Amanda Jirón-Murphy
July 30 – August 27, 2011

Philadelphia-based artist Janell Olah and DC-based curator Amanda Jirón-Murphy join forces to present a site-specific installation that responds to the systems of air vents, ductwork and electrical outlets present in Flashpoint Gallery. Sewn out of translucent vinyl, Olah's interconnected pods, tubes and clouds make use of the air-flow and electricity in the gallery while simultaneously generating their own light and air from an intricate system of fans and timers. Olah’s cloud shapes will form a narrow line down the length of Flashpoint’s main space where they will slowly inflate, deflate and be lit from within.

Although highly scientific in its planning and construction, you make me nostalgic for a place I've never known serves as a metaphor for the ways in which human experiences, emotions and relationships function. Combining inspiration from literature, design and her life experience, Olah's installation transforms the gallery space into a living, breathing environment.

Nicole Herbert: Trace
July 29 – September 30, 2011

Nicole Herbert’s Trace is an intervention into the everyday spaces of Flashpoint. Herbert’s site-specific works will be installed throughout Flashpoint’s hallways, offices and windows, encouraging the viewer to pay attention to overlooked areas and subtle architectural features. Herbert will juxtapose drawings, three-dimensional sculptural forms and found objects with existing architectural features to activate spaces outside of the traditional gallery context.  Herbert’s work aims to call attention to the overlooked aspects of the everyday environment by suspending fleeting impressions of familiar objects and contexts. This perceptual shift opens up the possibility to experience the world less reflexively and to question the mechanisms that filter and mediate our experience.
